    Some scary shit

My brother is deploying to Afghanistan for six months at the end of the month. He's a reservist, and I think his job involves air transport. I don't know exactly what he does, but I do know he's not infantry or anything like that.

This isn't the first time he's deployed, but I do think it's the longest. And I can't help but be worried.

My mom is definitely going to be very happy when this summer arrives -- that means her baby will be home and so will mine.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

So we're sitting around, watching TV, playing on the internet and generally doing holiday evening suburban things when we noticed what sounded like a low-flying plane. Then we heard it again and again and again. We then thought it might be the paving trucks that were supposed to re-do our streets. Then we looked outside and saw a helicopter with a searchlight circling around.

Then I noticed a police car, without lights, cruising up our street.

    Then we got nervous.

SM went around the house to check that the doors were locked and shut the blinds.

Okay, as I type this, I admit it sounds paranoid to lock all the doors, but that helicopter was circling low for a good 20 minutes, and it freaked us out a bit.

SM went online to see if he could find anything out. I decided to be more proactive and called the local district police station for information.

Turns out that there was a robbery a few miles away. Five men were chased in this direction, and four of them were caught literally three blocks (about a 1/3 of a mile) directly up the street. One jumped out of the car to escape. That's who they were looking for.

Turns out our paranoia might not have been so paranoid. I told SM to call our neighbors to let them know what was going on. Their response was along the lines of -- yeah, this has happened before. Welcome to the neighborhood. And BTW, too bad about the Sox and the Patriots.

Anyway, it quieted down for a while, so we figured the guy was caught. But just as I started typing this, the helicopter returned. I can hear it flying around outside right now, back and forth.

Oh well. Not much I can do but go back to our usual suburban evening activities -- TV, internet, playing computer games, etc.

    Porn for pets!

I am posting this purely in the interest of science.  Nope, had nothing to do with the oddity of this article.   Nor any salacious intent.  Or any fascination with the subject at hand.  No indeed.  I'm posting this piece because it's interesting and bizarre -- and because my dad is now my "friend" on Facebook, so posting articles there about chickens choking their chickens ain't gonna fly (not for me, at least).

All mixed (up) metaphors aside, here is the article in question: Hands or Paws or Anything They Got

Make sure you watch the embedded video.  Ahh, nature in its natural state!

    First

Although layoffs in private firms have been rampant, until today, none of my friends had been axed (to the best of my knowledge). It's actually kinda surprising that my circle of classmates, friends, etc. have gone unscathed, given the massive bad news in the legal sector. Layoff... offers being rescinded... no jobs at all...

My salary may suck, but working for the federal government is relatively stable. And I am very grateful for that. And not having to worry about if I'll get a pink slip anyday is definitely worth the trade-off in salary.

I hope the economy turns around soon... there's just too much bad news in the news and my inbox.

    ::sigh::

    New email scam, new twist...

Well, I guess the scam is actually nothing new, but the twist is.  It comes from the legitimate known email address in the name of someone you know.   A hacker accesses a friend's email account and then sends an urgent plea for help to send him/her money.  The name is right.  The address is right.  Just the facts are wrong.  Plausible but wrong.  And the language in the email also sounds a bit stilted, not what a native speaker would write.

So, if you get an email that looks like this, do your due diligence!

    ----- Original Message -----
    From: [someone you actually know]
    To: [their real email address]
    Sent: Friday, December 05, 2008 5:23 AM
Subject: I NEED YOUR URGENT HELP.

I am in hurry writing you this short message and I am sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to China for a program called "Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, HIV/AIDS, Poverty and Lack of Education. The program is taking place in three major countries in Asia, which are Taiwan, Singapore and China. It has been a very sad and bad moment for me, the present condition that i found myself is very hard for me to explain.

I am really stranded in China because I forgot my little bag in the Taxi where my money, passport, documents, cell phone which i have all my contacts and other valuable things were kept on my way to the Hotel am staying, I am facing a hard time here because i have no money on me and the weather is so cold right now. I am now owing a hotel bill of $1,400 and they wanted me to pay the bill soon else they will have to hand me over to the Hotel Management, I need this help from you urgently to help me back home, I need you to help me with the hotel bill and i will also need $1,500 to feed and help myself back home.

So please can you help me with a sum of $2,900 USD to sort out my problems here. I am sending you this email from the city Library, I will appreciate what so ever you can afford to send me for now and I promise to pay back your money as soon as i return home. So please use the details of one of the hotel managers below to send the money to me through Western Union money transfer because that is the only way i could be able to get it fast and leave since he has a valid ID to pick up the money for me from the western union. These are the details below....

    Last Name: Olajide
    First Name: Abideen Olaolu
Address: 27B Jiang Shi Tu, Guilin, Guangxi, China
    Text Question: To whom
    Answer: [friend's first name]

After you have send the money, email to me the western union money transfer control number or you can attach and forward to me the western union money transfer receipt so that i can pick up the money fast and leave. Right now, i dont have any acess to phone communications because the phone in my hotel room had been disconnected due to too much bills, i only have acess to the computer at the library where am sending you this email right now.

Hope to hear from you soon. The embassy here has already promised to give me a covering traveling papers that i will need to have my way back home, all i need right now is the money to settle up the bills and leave.

Thanks and get back to me soon.

    Sincerely,
    [someone you actually know]

That's what I get for going to the doctor!

I get a call from her, telling me that my blood work was abnormal. And she wants me to get more tests immediately. Tomorrow morning at the latest.

    Okay, tomorrow morning it is.

Seems I have a low platelet count. "Normal" is about 150. Me? 36. Um, yeah, that's pretty low.

I asked her what the implications of this count are and what might explain it -- and her answer included malaises ranging from leukemia (yikes, scary!) to a viral infection (not scary) to a mistake in the test (just plain annoying).

I'll take the mistake option, thank you.

Actually, I'm not at all worried, but SM is completely freaking out. I figure, why worry until there is something concrete, rather than imagined, to worry about. SM, of course, googled it and came away with all sorts of scary and incomplete information.

See? That's what I get for going to the doctor! I feel fine and perfectly healthy... until the doctor told me (potentially) otherwise.

Clearly, doctors make you sick. Better not to go. (KIDDING)

I'm such a guy that way.

    Mystery solved

Yup. It was an Amazon error. Phew. I didn't want this little cybermessage to be a harbinger of something else, like the plot to a bad movie or something.

I got this email from Amazon today. It has gotta be a computer glitch. But still, eeek.

    I feel nekid.

    And sad.

For the first time since I got the rock, I forgot to put it on this morning. It's absence is palpable. In the early days of the engagement, the ring felt odd on my finger -- heavy and almost demanding attention.

Now, without it, my ring finger on my left hand is almost itchy and uncomfortably light. Just like when you lose a tooth and you can't help but continutally run over the gap with your tongue... my left hand feels needy and wanting. And nekid.

    It's very strange.

Proud to be an American but ashamed of some fellow Americans

When I was channel surfing earlier this evening, I saw a bit on the local news (and then saw it on other channels too) about a group of high school students who, while waiting for their school bus at the bus stop, were robbed. At gunpoint.

That makes me so angry. So angry. And ashamed.

How did we as a society let things devolve to this? What parents raised their kids without any morals or integrity such that they would consider it acceptable to make a few bucks by terrorizing anyone at gunpoint, let alone kids on their way to school? Not that this is relevant, but what could they have possible gotten from these kids? A few iPods or cell phones? I can't imagine that they had much cash, especially given where this took place. And now these kids will forever have the memory of being threatened with a gun. Pointed at them. Good god.

And I also saw a piece on the news this morning about someone who dropped a bowling ball from a bridge onto a truck passing underneath.

    What the fuck???

The only reason someone does something like that is to hurt, maim or murder someone. This cannot be an accident. What kind of person does this? How do people get so mean?

I am completely at a loss. It makes me angry. And sad. And frustrated. How did we get to this place?

Reason #4,356 why I am a complete idiot...

So, this morning I had to get up uber early to get to a training downtown that started, well, uber early. Fortunately for me, SM had taken the day off, so he was able to save me 15 minutes of sweating by driving me to the metro station instead of me walking. Yay.

After that, it all went downhill. As I hauled my sorry, sweaty, sleepy ass down the escalator and boarded the metro train, I thought to myself, "Self, you are going to a federal building, which means you'll need a photo ID to enter. Since you are indeed a federal employee, why not put on your federal badge to facilitate the process? Heck, why not put it on now to save the fumbling later?"

And then I told myself that that was indeed a good idea. So, sitting on the metro, I opened my purse to grab my ID from the pocket where I usually keep it.

    No ID.

My purse is rather small, so there weren't too many places it could go. I fumbled around my purse hoping to locate it. But alas, no. No ID. Not in the purse or the briefcase I was also carrying.

    Hmmm...

Then I tried to remember if I could recall taking it off last night and putting it in my purse... and no, I had no distinct memory of doing that. So I wondered if the ID was still on my pants from yesterday? Maybe, but then again, I washed those pants last night, and I know the ID wasn't on them when I tossed them into the washer or dryer. So, no dice there.

Then I wondered if perhaps I had left the ID in my office yesterday? I sometimes take it off (the ID, that is) at work when it's irritating me or I have no belt loop to which I can affix it. A possibility, but not likely. Hmmm, what the heck did I do with that stupid badge?

And then I started to get really irritated at myself because I had left my cell phone at home, so I couldn't call SM to have him check the table where I had my purse or other possible places where the ID might have escaped to. And I was going to a training, so I couldn't call him first thing in the morning when I got into the office because I wasn't due into the office until first thing in the afternoon.

Crap. I was getting really irritated by this point. I started having visions of having to get a temporary one issued and then a new one when I couldn't find it. And the office would make fun of me as the girl who lost her ID in less than a year when most had had theirs without incident since issuance. Every scenario of how my stupidity would come to light for all to mock ran through my head. Grrrr... it wasn't a pretty sight.

And I got even more annoyed with myself.

Great way to start the morning, eh? No ID and no cell phone to call anyone about it. And the hassle of getting a new ID issued. Ugh. I was working myself up into a mini-tizzy over this. All directed at myself, of course.

Soon, however, we were pulling into the station where I needed to transfer, so I stood up and walked to the doors on the metrocar and waited there until the train stopped and the doors opened.

And while waiting, I noticed my reflection in the glass of the doors. And I noticed that dangling from my belt loop, there hung my ID. The one I had previously thought would be good to put on in anticipation of going to the training. Apparently, the thought was such a good one that it ran through my head twice. Only I forgot that little detail -- and the part where I actually put it on.

What an idiot. What a waste of energy.

I guess it was a good thing after all that I didn't have my cell phone to call SM to get him looking for it. I only would have had to call him back later to tell him what an idiot I am. That the entire time I was looking for it to put it on, I was already wearing it.

    Idiot. Complete and total.

    Holy head-spinning, Batman!

It's already June 13th! That's the middle of June! We're almost halfway through 2007.

How the heck did that happen?

(Okay, so I know I'm not telling you anything you, as a sentient adult, don't already know... but jeez it seems like time goes so fast these days! Don't I sound like an old geezer?)

That scared the crap outta me

It was a dark and stormy night. It was also late, and no one else was home. SS was alone with the creaking of the old house, the rustling of the ancient trees against the powerlines, the scraping of the branches across the fence and the side of the house. She was all alone with her thoughts when all of a sudden she was jolted from her reverie as the dog started barking angrily, loudly, pointedly, her attention fused to the front door. Surprised at the vigor with which the dog bellowed, SS got out of bed to investigate. Donning her robe, SS told the dog, "Find it. Show me where it is" and followed her downstairs. SS looked, but she heard nothing, saw nothing at the front door. But the dog didn't relent. She was intent on something -- delivering her message, but to whom? -- so SS continued on, following the dog's lead. They inspected the kitchen door and then the side door and were about to go into the basement when SS saw it.

The side door. The sliding glass door.

It was dark outside. Nothing so unusual about that except SS had just, not five minutes ago, turned on the deck light. The one with the outside switch that could only be turned on from its hidden spot on the side of the deck. It was now off. SS could see nothing outside, and only her worried, confused and increasingly anxious reflection in the sliding glass door.

Feeling intensely alone, SS thought to herself, "Where the hell is my cell phone?" Her heart rate increasing as she chided herself for being so careless.

The family room. It was in the family room. The now dark family room. "Shit," she thought and went in quickly, but stealthily to grab it off of the sofa.

The dog had hushed and was now quiet. SS could hear nothing, see nothing.

"Okay," she thought. "All of the lights in this room -- and only this room -- are out. It's gotta be the circuit."

SS crossed back through the kitchen, clutching her cell phone in the pocket of her robe and nervously glancing out the back windows as she went downstairs with the dog at her heels. Stepping gingerly over the refuse and rubbish from the recent construction on her basement, SS made her way to the back closet where she flicked on the light and opened the breaker box.

Yes, indeed, the circuit had flipped off. With a quick click, SS returned power to the family room and went upstairs where she was relieved to see the outside light back on, illuminating the deck.

"Phew, only the circuit," she thought. "That scared the crap outta me."

SS sat down on the sofa. The Tivo powered back up and began recording the Red Sox game for SM, interrupted only briefly. With the dog and her cell phone to keep her company, SS decided not to be caught with a dead battery. She went back upstairs to the bedroom to plug her cell phone back in, check on her eBay auction and read email, the dog's clackety-clacking of her nails on the wood floors echoing behind her.

Distracted for a moment by impulse competitive shopping, SS got caught up in her eBay bidding. Sadly, she didn't win the auction, despite vulturing over it and sniping with a higher bid at the last moment. "Oh well," she thought. "I wouldn't have paid more than that for it. The other guy must have really wanted it."

The rhythm of the clicking of her keyboard and the dog snoring from her bed in the hallway gave SS comfort. "I trust her ears," she said to herself. "Even if she is asleep."

No sooner was the punctuation on that thought than the dog again burst into life, barking with determination and bounding down the stairs. SS grabbed her cell phone and followed her once again.

"Find it," she told the dog. "Show me."

This time, the dog did. She scurried through the livingroom, kitchen and family room and scrambled out the doggy door onto the deck. Then she quickly ran down the stairs and disappeared into the dark of the back yard, barking at great volume and intensity and length. The light was still on over the deck, but SS couldn't see the dog. She could only hear her.

And then she couldn't. Suddenly, abruptly, the dog stopped barking.

    SS started to sweat.

The light was still on, so SS, in her bathrobe, sidled up to the curtain closed over half of the sliding glass door and peered out. From that angle, she could only see part of the deck and nothing beyond it. And no dog. No barking either.

    "Shit," she whispered to herself.

Images of mutilated pets ran through her mind, and her heart started thumping in her chest.

SS, still unwilling to step directly in front of the sliding glass door, called for the dog. "Gidget," she said in a low voice.

Nothing. No rattling of the dog's collar. No clackety-clacking of her nails on the wood.

"Here girl," she said louder and then called her by whistling.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity but was in reality perhaps ten seconds, SS heard the dog climbing the deck stairs and come through the doggy door.

SS grabbed her. Just in time too. She had to wipe off her paws and coat before she shook off the rain all over SS's new suede chair!

"Okay," SS thought to herself. "Enough of this. I'm just freaking myself out. And when the fuck does SM get home?"

The lights were still on, but rather than subject herself to the continuing drama of an over-active imagination, she decided to go upstairs where she could ignore the fickle circuit breaker by playing online. So she did.

Until she noticed that she had lost her internet connection.

"Fuuuuuuck," she thought to herself. "The modem is plugged in in the family room." Cell phone in hand, she trudged back down to the basement to flip the breaker. Which she did. And did again, four or five times in the course of an hour.

    ---
Yes, ladies and gents, with slight embellishment and an intentional attempt at campy descriptions, that was my evening. The lights did go out. I did freak out mildly. The dog did go beszerk and run outside. I did recall stories of pets being beheaded. This is how NOT to entertain yourself when you're home alone on a dark and rainy night.

Gidget is asleep on her bed in the hall outside of my bedroom. She detects no bogey-man right now, but I do have to trek back to the basement because for 80% of the time while I was writing this post, the internet was down. Because the modem was down. Because there was no electricity in the family room. Because the circuit flipped again. Because... I don't know why. It can't be overloaded. When Carlos was doing work on the doggy door yesterday, we used more juice than the TV and light take. I don't get it.

And SM called from the airport. I told him the whole story. He's on his way home. I'll be glad to have him home.

UPDATE: SM is now home. He went outside to check the lights and figured out my little thriller mystery. Seems that some of the wiring for the outside light isn't properly insulated, so the rain is shorting it out. Which shorts out the circuit. No bogey-man. Just an old house with lots of things jerry-rigged.
