Coincidence or deeper meaning?

Language is a funny thing... literally and figuratively. Language reveals so much about a culture and how people think.

So why is it that if you merely add a letter...
MOTHER becomes SMOTHER

and if you subtract one...
BROTHER becomes BOTHER.

Hmmmm.
